Iran ‘to consider’ 2026 World Cup withdrawal after United States and Israel strikes | OneFootball

Marca reports that Iran are considering withdrawing from the 2026 World Cup after the United States and Israel carried out large-scale strikes on Iranian territory on Saturday.

Iranian federation president Mehdi Taj told state television it was unlikely Iran could calmly plan for the tournament after the United States attack, adding that any decision would be taken by sporting officials. He also announced the domestic league was suspended until further notice.

Iran have qualified for a fourth successive finals and are in Group G of the event co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Their three group games are scheduled on United States soil, against New Zealand on 15 June and Belgium on 21 June, both in Los Angeles, then Egypt on 26 June in Seattle.

Earlier in the day, according to ESPN, FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström said the organisation had held a meeting and that it was too early to comment in detail. He said FIFA would monitor developments, continue dialogue with the three host governments, and ensure the safety of all.
