Iraola gives update on injury to Liverpool defender | OneFootball

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has provided an update on the injury suffered by Joe Gomez on  their pre-season tour.

The centre-back started Liverpool’s first game of pre-season, but was forced off after just ten minutes against Sunderland. He did not feature in their next fixture against Wrexham.

“Joe has a muscle injury,” explained Iraola. “I think it was quite clear since he complained straight away, so it will depend how he evolves, but he will be off for some weeks.”

“It’s a muscle injury and with muscle injuries it is difficult to say one day, but normally I always put it myself as one month.

“If it goes very good the injury is a little bit less. If not, it goes a little more. It’s not massive, it’s a normal muscle injury.

“I think it’s going to be impossible to have him for the start of the season, because we are not so far. It shouldn’t be a lot more.”

Although they have won both of their pre-season matches, the injury to Gomez has left the Reds very shorthanded at the back. Virgil van Dijk is yet to return from the World Cup, whilst Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet remain injured. It is not an ideal situation for Iraola, less than a month out from the start of the Premier League.

“You have seen these games, we are pretty thin in the centre-back position,” the Spanish coach admitted. “We still don’t have Virgil.

“The only real centre-backs we have right now are Mor (Talla Ndiaye) and Ify (Ndukwe). They are 18 years old, just arrived to the club and they are doing incredibly well.

“I think Jeremy is ready to go and we will recover Virgil. But I’m happy that playing against Sunderland, against Wrexham, good teams, with 18-year-old centre-backs, the team has showed composure and solidity at the back and it speaks very well about them.”
