Iraola reflects on win over Spurs ahead of return to former club | OneFootball

Andoni Iraola said that Liverpool’s performance against Spurs was close to the version of the team that he wants to see going forward.

Goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai ensured that Iraola’s side beat Spurs 3-1 in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Conor Gallagher’s goal 20 minutes from time made the job more difficult for Liverpool, but Iraola was impressed by his side’s performance.

“I think the game was quite different phases,” he said. “We were pushing a lot and then went ahead, but once we were ahead they were close to our zones, especially set pieces we were suffering. I think we’ve been good.

“I felt the team during good phases today; it felt like energy and everyone pushing. It was close to the version we want.”

Their next task is a trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League. The Spaniard left the south coast side in the summer to join Liverpool and understands the nature of the tie.

“I know the game is very difficult,” he said. “You see how many they lose in a season and it is a difficult place to go. To win there, you have to be really good.”
