Iraq will take on Senegal in an important Group I match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Friday at Toronto Stadium. Both sides are under pressure to secure all three points, and a strong goal margin could be crucial for their chances of advancing to the next stage of the competition.
Iraq arrive in worse form after suffering two heavy defeats in Group I. They lost 4-1 to Norway in their opening match and were then beaten 3-0 by France. Although they showed some promise in earlier games, including a 1-1 friendly draw with Spain and a 1-0 win over Andorra in May, their defensive weaknesses have significantly affected their performances in the tournament.
Heading into this final group match, Iraq has a few injury concerns, giving head coach Graham Arnold flexibility in selecting his team.
The only slight worry is captain Aymen Hussein, who is dealing with a minor muscle issue but is still in contention to play.
With elimination almost certain after back-to-back defeats, Arnold is likely to rotate his squad and give opportunities to other players to gain valuable World Cup experience.
Young midfielder Zidane Iqbal is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup, as he remains key to the team’s creativity. He will look to support forward Ali Al-Hamadi, who is set to lead the attack.
In defence, players like Zaid Tahseen and Merchas Doski will be tasked with holding the line as Iraq aim to earn their first point of the tournament.
Possible Iraq starting XI: Basil; Ali, Tahseen, Hashem, Doski; Ismail, Al-Ammari, Iqbal; Qasem, Al-Hamadi, Bayesh
The match will kick off at 8pm BST on Friday, 26th June.
