Jurgen Klopp will take to the Anfield dugout once again today as Liverpool’s legends team play host to their Borussia Dortmund counterparts.
The deified former Reds boss led the club to Premier League and Champions League glory during his iconic nine-season tenure, and retakes the reins against another ex-club alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and John Aldridge in a highly-accomplished managerial quartet.
The likes of Steven Gerrard, Thiago Alcantara and Pepe Reina will all don Liverpool colours once more but face stern opposition, with Dortmund boasting numerous players that have only just entered retirement, six-time Bundesliga winner Mats Hummels, 37, among them.
Liverpool Legends will nevertheless know their quality, having beaten a star-studded Chelsea Legends side that included Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and John Terry in October.
Liverpool Legends’ clash against Borussia Dortmund Legends will kick off at 3pm on Saturday 28 March at Anfield.
Fans stream the match for free on Liverpool’s official Facebook, YouTube and TikTok channels. The game can also be watched on LFCTV or All Red Video, the latter of which requires a subscription which starts at £4.99 per month.
Only a handful of Liverpool’s squad, a who’s who of 21st-century Reds stars, previously worked under Klopp during his time at the club. Thiago was integral to the side that came two games away from winning the quadruple in 2022, while Martin Skrtel and Ragnar Klavan both played in his early defences.
Gerrard also makes his Anfield return alongside fellow former captain Sami Hyypia, with Peter Crouch, Dirk Kuyt and Reina among the fan favourites stepping out in L4 again. Albert Riera, recently appointed as Eintracht Frankfurt’s new manager, makes his own playing comeback. Liverpool’s side also boasts two former stars of the club’s women’s team, with Natasha Dowie and Louise Schillgard featuring.

Dortmund, meanwhile, boast a number of the regulars from Klopp’s team that won two Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012. Roman Weidenfeller, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Lukasz Piszczek and Kevin Grosskreutz are all names that will ring bells from Klopp’s era, but their most notable figure will be Hummels, who only retired from football last year after a brief spell at Roma.
Returning to Liverpool with Dortmund is Karl-Heinz Riedle, who made 75 appearances and scored 15 goals for Liverpool between 1997 and 1999, while 56-year-old Paul Lambert - the former Aston Villa and Norwich manager - may also get a run out.
Liverpool Legends squad: Pepe Reina, Jerzy Dudek, Sander Westerveld, Sami Hyypia, Martin Skrtel, Ragnar Klavan, Martin Kelly, Fabio Aurelio, Gregory Vignal, Steven Gerrard, Thiago, Yossi Benayoun, Vladimir Smicer, Igor Biscan, Mark Gonzalez, Jay Spearing, Louise Schillgard, Peter Crouch, Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel, Jermaine Pennant, Albert Riera, Florent Sinama Pongolle, Natasha Dowie.
