Is Mexico still safe to host the 2026 World Cup? President responds
Mexico’s president said there is no risk to hosting the 2026 World Cup despite recent security incidents in Jalisco.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that all guarantees are in place for the country to host matches at FIFA World Cup 2026 following recent unrest linked to a major anti-drug operation.
The comments came after violent incidents in Jalisco state where roadblocks, fires and clashes with security forces were reported following the arrest and killing of drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho”.
The events raised questions about visitor safety ahead of the global tournament.
When asked if the World Cup could pose a risk to visiting fans, Sheinbaum was clear in her response. She said there is “no danger” and stressed that the situation is under control.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the president explained that security forces are active on the ground and that conditions are gradually returning to normal.
She acknowledged that some new road checkpoints appeared overnight but confirmed that authorities are working to protect public safety.
A spokesperson for FIFA said the organization is closely monitoring developments and remains in regular contact with Mexican authorities.
The spokesperson added that FIFA will continue to follow guidance from federal, state and local bodies to ensure safety and stability while supporting efforts to restore normal life in affected areas.
