Having said that, Marmoush can spend large portions of matches on the periphery of proceedings. That area of his game does need to improve. 

Confidence is vital in the Manchester City environment. Squad competition is fierce. Minutes are earned, not handed out. The 25/26 season has been a battle at times for Marmoush. A knee injury and his participation at AFCON limited his opportunities. He has also been regularly used as a substitute this season by Pep Guardiola.

City’s forward line remains stacked with quality. Rotation is inevitable across domestic and European competitions. Marmoush is not guaranteed a starting role every week.

However, versatility should work in Marmoush’s favor. He can operate centrally or from wide areas. That flexibility gives Guardiola tactical options, especially against deep defensive blocks where unpredictability is needed. But there is an issue with that which has emerged this season. 

The issue for Omar Marmoush is he seems to be viewed by Pep Guardiola primarily as a back up to Erling Haaland. Marmoush doesn’t do his best work on a wing, and it appears that Pep Guardiola doesn’t want to play the Egyptian international out wide. Marmoush is too good a player to solely be a back up striker. 

Also, we have seen Haaland, Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo start together on occasions this season. The issue is when those three start together it does appear clunky. When those three players start they do need a player like Rayan Cherki to start with them. Otherwise the trio do lack the service they need as we saw during Manchester City’s recent 1-1 draw with West Ham. Marmoush, Haaland and Semenyo didn’t work together before Marmoush was taken off after an hour. Perhaps that trio can’t play together and if they can’t it is hard to see Marmoush starting for City if every player is fit and available.

Tactical fit within the Pep Guardiola system.

One of the most demanding aspects of playing for Guardiola is positional discipline. Wingers must know when to stretch the pitch and when to invert. Strikers must recognize pressing triggers instantly.

Marmoush’s work rate has been noticeable. He presses with energy and recovers quickly when possession is lost. That commitment aligns with City’s defensive structure.

In possession, he appears increasingly comfortable receiving between lines rather than only attacking open grass. That development is important. Premier League defenses rarely allow continuous space behind.

What Omar Marmoush needs to improve is his overall impact on games. He needs to do more then simply score goals. The Egyptian international showed how damaging he can be in the Bundesliga. Manchester City will be hoping that he can have the same impact for them next season or even across the back end of this season if the opportunity is there for Marmoush to start or play more often.

Is Omar Marmoush  a long-term player for City?

Omar Marmoush’s time at Manchester City has seen him show flashes of his quality and also the areas of his game that need improvement. 

Manchester City’s environment encourages evolution. Training alongside elite teammates sharpens decision making. Tactical detail becomes second nature over time.

If Marmoush evolves as a player, there’s no reason his trajectory cannot continue upward. His physical attributes are clear. His technical level fits. The remaining factor is improvement over the long term.

Marmoush did adapt quickly to Pep Guardiola’s complex tactical system. He’s contributed in meaningful moments last season and against Newcastle in the FA Cup this season. The signs are there that Marmoush can be more than simply a sqaud player for Manchester City. 

However, at Manchester City, promise is only the starting point. Sustained excellence is the requirement. Marmoush hasn’t secured his place permanently yet, but the foundation is there.
