If Manchester City are to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea this summer they will have to get to work quickly. David Ornstein reported for The Athletic late last night that Chelsea had imposed a deadline on any deal that would see the Argentinian midfielder to depart the club. As per Ornstein’s report, City have until 5pm Friday to submit an offer for Enzo Fernandez. Otherwise, the combative midfielder will remain a member of Xabi Alonso’s squad for next season. Sam Lee has also shared his thoughts on whether City will move for Enzo Fernandez. Perhaps there is a chance after all that Manchester City will move to sign a midfielder that Enzo Maresca wants.
Sam Lee has reported for The Athletic that Manchester City have maintained an interest in signing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea all summer. Furthermore, Lee reports that City will be busy trying to find out if Chelsea’s stance on selling Fernandez is as definitive in private as it is in public. Also, Lee reports that Manchester City could attempt to negotiate down Chelsea’s £120 million asking price for Enzo Fernandez.
It is also reported by Sam Lee that Enzo Fernandez has been a top transfer target for Manchester City since the end of last season. Also, Lee adds that City are determined to back Enzo Maresca in the transfer market this summer. Given Chelsea’s deadline for any suitors to make their move to sign Enzo Fernandez, an opportunity to sign a top transfer target may have arrived for Manchester City.
Chelsea’s self-imposed deadline for any bids from Manchester City or any other clubs interested in signing Enzo Fernandez is understandable. Chelsea have their own plans for the 2026-27 season and they won’t want them to be destabilised. That is a perfectly understandable position and in a sense you do think City should impose a similar timeline with Barcelona and their bid to sign Rodri.
However, back to the point at hand. The City do have a clear window to make their move to sign one of their top transfer targets in front of them. Chelsea’s asking price to sell Enzo Fernandez is firmly established. As is the time frame for a bid to be sent. It is up to Manchester City to now consider their options and make their move. If they are desperate to sign Enzo Fernandez, Hugo Viana and company know what must be done. The answer as to whether City will make their move should arrive relatively quickly.
Sam Lee’s most recent report shows how eager Manchester City have been to sign Enzo Fernandez throughout this summer. They may now have that opening. Perhaps it is a market opportunity that City will seize upon.
Paying £120 million, or thereabouts, for Fernandez does seem steep. However, City may feel that the opportunity to sign a top transfer target is too good to turn down. If Chelsea’s deadline holds that answer will arrive in a timely fashion. If City are going to sign Enzo Fernandez they will have to make their move. Otherwise, they will have to focus on other midfield targets given Chelsea’s stance.
