Alexander Isak has said his first Premier League goal for Liverpool has been a ‘long time coming’.
Isak opened his league account for the Reds as the champions bounced back from recent results to win 2-0 at West Ham. A brilliant side-foot finish from Isak opened the scoring at the London Stadium, before Cody Gakpo sealed the win in stoppage time.
For Isak, his goal was a moment of relief. The 26-year-old’s only goal so far this season had come in the League Cup, a disappointing return from the £125m British record signing.
A missed pre-season and groin injury have contributed to his struggles and Isak admitted he is still working to get back to his best level.
“I’m aware that it has been a long time coming and I have been trying to get back to my best form. I’m still on the way but I am happy to get that goal,” he told Sky Sports at full-time.
“The best feeling today is that we win the game and that is the best way to get a good spirit in the group but of course I am a striker so scoring goals will always help me. We have to use this win in a good way but also be humble.
“We’ve had tough times. One win doesn’t necessarily mean we’re back, we have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum.”
