Wilson Isidor scored the only goal as Sunderland secured their first Premier League win of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham at the Stadium of Light.

The result ended Sunderland’s 17-year wait for a top-flight home win against the Cottagers and handed Álvaro Arbeloa a second successive defeat as Fulham manager.

The opening half was a cagey affair, with neither side able to create much of note. Fulham’s Josh King had the best opportunity when he raced onto Alex Iwobi’s through ball, but fired over the crossbar.

The game remained short on clear chances after the break, prompting both managers to make changes in search of an opening.

Sunderland substitute Isidor came close shortly after his introduction, hitting the post following a quick counter-attack. However, the striker made no mistake in the 75th minute, tapping home from close range after Habib Diarra’s low cross evaded Bernd Leno.

Romaine Mundle went close late on, but Sunderland held firm to claim all three points. The victory lifts Régis Le Bris’ side to 11th, while Fulham suffer consecutive league defeats.
