Isidro Pitta, now at Red Bull Bragantino, says Ángel Romero sounded him out over a move to Corinthians in 2024, but nothing came of it.
"We spoke a lot with the national team. He is a very good, very calm guy. He speaks little, but he is great fun. When I was at Cuiabá, he told me he wanted me to speak to the Corinthians people, but that was between agents, I did not speak to anyone. We also hope he gets back to his best to return to the national team, because he deserves it," said Pitta, speaking to ESPN.
The pair played together for Paraguay in 2024 and 2025, when their friendship began. Neither was called for this year's friendlies against Morocco and Greece, but both are on Gustavo Alfaro's provisional World Cup list, with the final squad due between 26 May and 1 June.
Romero is the foreign player with the most appearances for Corinthians, 377 in two spells, 2014 to 2019 and 2023 to 2025. He was the Neo Química Arena's top scorer until Yuri Alberto overtook him in May last year, and he has 67 goals and six trophies for the club.
After leaving at the end of 2025, Romero joined Boca Juniors, with a strong chance of meeting Corinthians in the Libertadores. Boca are currently second in their group and Corinthians lead Group E, so a last-16 meeting depends on the draw.
Corinthians visit Peñarol on Thursday at Estadio Campeón Del Siglo at 21:30. Victory or a draw will secure the group lead.
