Israel and Italy lock horns on Monday in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, in what promises to be a showdown between two teams chasing Norway for top spot in Group I.
With both sides suffering defeats to the group leaders, this neutral-venue clash at Debrecen’s Nagyerdei Stadion (Hungary) could decide who holds second place going into the final fixtures.
Coach Ran Ben Shimon has named an attack-minded 23-man squad, featuring in-form forwards Manor Solomon and Tai Baribo. Goalkeeper Daniel Peretz retains his place, while Oscar Gloukh and Dor Peretz form part of a creative midfield. The only setback is defender Sean Goldberg, who remains sidelined with a minor hamstring strain sustained in training. Ben Shimon confirmed no further injuries and insisted his side “arrived in Hungary fully focused on securing a result that keeps our World Cup dream alive.”
Francesco Pio Esposito made his senior bow against Estonia, while Giacomo Raspadori has thrown his name back into the mix after delivering a goal and two assists off the bench last time out. Both are pushing hard to partner Mateo Retegui. Moise Kean was also on target against Estonia which might keep him in the starting XI.
Gattuso is set to stick with the defensive pairing of Alessandro Bastoni and Riccardo Calafiori, who shut the door against Estonia, while Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Barella form a tenacious midfield.
Israel have won three out of their four qualifier matches so far, with their only loss coming against the group leaders Norway. Things are tightly poised in the group and a positive result against Italy will give Israel a huge chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Italy have bounced back after their opening defeat to Norway with back-to-back wins against Moldova and Estonia and will look to climb into second place with another win against in-form Israel.
