It didn't take long for Chiefs to immediately add competition for Gardner Minshew

Not even 24 hours after signing Gardner Minshew to presumably backup Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs added another quarterback to their roster. The team agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Bailey Zappe, according to Tom Pelissero.
Zappe, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Western Kentucky, was famous for the absolutely insane numbers he put up during his 2021 season with the Hilltoppers. He threw for just shy of 6,000 yards while also throwing a whopping 62 touchdowns. Yes, the competition in Conference USA isn't quite like the Power-4 conference's competition but those stats are impressive no matter how you swing it.
The Patriots drafted Zappe in 2022 and he started eight games for them during his two years in New England. He actually spent time on the Chiefs practice squad in 2024 before the Browns claimed him off of it and Zappe went on to start exactly one game in Cleveland.
Clearly, the Chiefs coaching staff likes what Zappe has to offer because this is now his second stint with the team. While it's likely going to be Minshew that wins the QB2 job, Zappe is a solid third-string quarterback to have on the roster and hopefully, he never comes close to seeing the field.
It's nice to see the Chiefs adding quarterbacks with experience behind Mahomes and while we hope to never see Minshew or Zappe on the field unless it's a blowout, Chiefs fans have experienced first hand how a good backup quarterback can save your season. Matt Moore had to start two games for Kansas City in 2019 and helped the Chiefs stay in the hunt for the two seed in the playoffs, which helped them go on to win the Super Bowl.
Again, let's hope we don't even hear Zappe's name during the season but this is a solid move for Kansas City. The more depth on the roster at any position, the better.
