It has been a busy couple of days regarding transfer rumours regarding Manchester City. It went from appearing that the club was only focused on outgoings to links to potential moves for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo and PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Those moves seem to be in Manchester City’s back pocket if Savinho and Ederson leave the club. Those moves now seem to be a realistic possibility. It is now a case of if one domino falls, Manchester City will kick into gear. Perhaps the City hierarchy knows what is coming and is ahead of the curve.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester City have denied any interest in AS Monaco winger Maghnes Aliouche. Furthermore, Romano reports that if Savinho is sold to Tottenham Manchester City will pursue a move for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. Lastly, Romano reports that Tottenham’s first bid for Savinho was well short of City’s valuation of the Brazilian winger.
The domino that must fall to kick-start City’s bid to sign Rodrygo is Spurs’ interest in Savinho. If they meet Manchester City’s valuation, the young winger will likely be sold. That will see City move for Rodrygo. The telling part of Manchester City’s interest in Rodrygo is that the club so far hasn’t denied its interest in the Brazilian international. City has quickly shut down any interest in Maghnes Akliouche. What happens with Savinho is a story to watch for. That could be the first domino to fall.
There is another story that could develop rather quickly at Manchester City. That surrounds the goalkeeping situation. French publication L’Equipe reports that Manchester City have agreed on personal terms with Gianluigi Donnarumma ahead of a potential move to the Etihad. But what is even more interesting is that City haven’t denied having any interest in signing the Italian international.
Jack Gaughan has reported for the Daily Mail that Manchester City want to keep Ederson for next season. Furthermore, Gaughan reports that Galatasaray have an interest in signing Ederson. It is expected that the Turkish giants are ready to submit an offer to City to sign Ederson. Gaughan further reports that City would let Ederson leave if a suitable offer arrives. That would clear the way for them to move for Donnarumma as per Jack Gaughan’s report.
At the moment, Manchester City’s moves for Rodrygo and Donnarumma are dependent on Savinho and Ederson’s futures. My question is: Would City agree on personal terms with Donnarumma if Ederson were set to stay? Perhaps Manchester City are covering their bases. That would be a sound strategy. But a player with the quality of Donnarumma isn’t going to wait around to decide his future. He will have other options. What those could be isn’t immediately apparent. But City wouldn’t have made their move for Donnarumma without some knowledge of what may be coming.
The Rodrygo/Savinho situation is similar to the Ederson/Donnarumma scenario. If Savinho leaves for Tottenham, then City will move. That much is clear. There is no denial from City surrounding their interest in Rodrygo. That seems telling. It’s just another situation to keep track of as things currently stand.
But you do sense if one domino in Ederson, for example, falls the other domino in Savinho may fall quickly with it. If Manchester City are to sign Rodrygo and Donnarumma they’ll want those deals done as quickly as possible. For now it is a waiting game. But it could all click into gear very quickly. Or Savinho and Ederson stay and Manchester City won’t move for Donnarumma or Rodrygo. That’s a realistic possibility also.
