Jadon Sancho’s future is being discussed heavily at the moment.
The winger is on loan from Manchester United and Chelsea have an obligation to buy him at the end of this season. But there are rumours they could pay a penalty clause to break that deal.
It’s a sign of how badly things have turned that this is even a point of discussion. Sancho has one assist and no goals since December.
Of course it’s not just about Sancho’s form either, there are a lot of other variables in play. Given we already paid a lot for Pedro Neto and have Noni Madueke on the books, and have Estevao Willian arriving next summer, there’s going to be a real battle for minutes in the short term.
Then there are the loanees – what do we do with Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling when they’re back? What about Mykhailo Mudryk’s future?
It would make sense to keep Sancho if he was doing conspicuously well, but as he’s not, we can understand why this is at least being considered.

Former Chelsea full back Glen Johnson had the following to say about what his old club should do:
“Jadon Sancho started well at Chelsea, but the problem with him is that he’s too inconsistent,” he said in quotes picked up by the Evening Standard.
“On his day when he’s up for it, he can look like a world beater, but it just isn’t happening often enough to justify the transfer for Chelsea at the moment.
“If Chelsea have the opportunity to go back to Manchester United at the end of the season and not pay the transfer fee for the deal, they may see that as a better outcome for them from a financial standpoint.
“I could see why they’d be looking to do that – the levels we’re seeing with Sancho at the moment are similar to what we’ve seen from him at other clubs for a while now, really.”
