Exclusive: Former Tottenham Hotspur Defender Reacts to Disastrous Premier League Campaign

Tottenham Hotspur’s domestic campaign took another sickening blow on Monday, as they suffered a 1-2 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest. Despite only losing by the one goal, Forest could’ve been out of sight by the end of the first-half.

The defeat was Spurs’ 18th defeat in their 33 Premier League games so far this season, leaving them all the way down in 16th place. Consequently, head coach Ange Postecoglou finds himself under immense pressure, with Spurs’ UEFA Europa League campaign being the Australian’s only saving grace.

Some reports have already suggested that regardless of their success in Europe, Postecoglou could face being replaced this summer. AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been heavily linked with a switch to North London, whilst Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Fulham’s Marco Silva have also been touted.

After beating Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-final, Spurs now face the task of Bodo/Glimt in the semi-final, where a potential clash with fellow strugglers Manchester United could await.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alan Hutton spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on the defeat to Nottingham Forest and their season so far…

Reaction to Nottingham Forest Defeat

“Tottenham shoot themselves in the foot constantly and they dont it again against Nottingham Forest,” began Hutton, “They were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes and it could’ve easily been more and that has been their problem all season long.”

“It suits Forest once they have a lead because they will just sit back and hit you on the counter-attack,” continued Hutton, “That’s Spurs’ 18th defeat in the Premier League this season, which is nowhere near good enough and it needs to change quickly.”

Throughout the season, Postecoglou has blamed injuries for the reasons behind Spurs’ weak form. However, the returns of Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusveski means that he now has almost a full-strength squad to pick from.

As it stands, Spurs sit just one point above West Ham United in 17th place, despite scoring the same amount of goals as second-placed Arsenal.

Spurs’ Domestic Campaign

Although they’re mathimatically safe from relegation, the thought of finishing the season in 17th place should be nothing short of alarming. Hutton believes that this current squad of players should be performing to a much higher level, saying: “You’re not trying to tell me that this current group of players should be 17th in the Premier League, because they absolutely shouldn’t be, in my opinion.”

A 17th-placed finish would be Spurs’ lowest league position since 1977, so there’s no doubt that questions will be asked over Postecoglou’s ability to lead this squad forward in the future.
