Micah Richards has been on his Rest is Football podcast criticising Chelsea’s summer business after the Blues slumped to another Premier League defeat.

“I think it was a mistake, Chelsea letting Enzo Fernandez go without replacing him. [Moises] Caicedo is a wonderful player. [Romeo] Lavia also is a very good player, but I think they should have brought someone in before letting Enzo go,” Micah Richards said in quotes picked up by the Chelsea Chronicle.

“But it was too late. Then you’ve got [Valentin] Barco and then you’ve got [Jordan] Henderson, who’s a really good experienced pro, but the way they want to play with a high energy, having an old and someone young, the balance in midfield didn’t look right.”

You can debate the transfer strategy in midfield until the cows come home. Should they have kept Enzo? Should they have sold him for a little less money earlier in the summer and replaced him? What is very clear is that, on the pitch, the balance just isn’t right.

The return of Moises Caicedo should change that – the whole season right now feels like it’s resting on that – but even if it does, the fact there’s not another player in the squad who can do what he does is a big problem.
