Charlie Austin recalls a key moment in a Blackburn v Burnley clash dating back to March 2013, which cost the Clarets all three points at Ewood Park.

Former Burnley forward, Charlie Austin has labelled a controversial moment between Blackburn and Burnley as a 'shambles', which plenty of fans from his former side will agree with.

Both Blackburn and Burnley have had plenty of fiery encounters on the pitch against each other, with plenty of eye-opening moments along the way.

Austin highlighted one of the East Lancashire derbies that he played in whilst with Burnley, in a recent interview on The Charlie Austin Football Channel.

The match took place at Ewood Park in March 2013, and Burnley had the lead against their rivals after Jason Shackell followed up on his own header, which had originally hit the woodwork.

However, David Dunn netted a controversial equaliser for the hosts late on, which was later shown as being offside, which will have only added further frustration to the Burnley supporters and players.

'We got stitched up' - Austin makes Burnley revelation

Austin revealed that his former side were stitched up due to that offside decision that wasn't given in their favour, before recalling an eye-opening moment during in another of his visits to Ewood Park involving a protest towards Blackburn's owners.

"We talk about Ewood Park, right. I've played in the Burnley v Blackburn derby. That is tasty, my friend. We got stitched up because David Dunn scored an equaliser in the last minute, and it was miles offside.

"Dyche was in charge then, and it was a shambles. I remember playing one day there also, because they're (the Venky's) the chicken farmers aren't they. They had a chicken come on the pitch with a little Blackburn scarf, obviously not them (the Venky's), as it was a fan protest thing. A Venky's chicken came onto the pitch, it was mental."

Austin's memorable Burnley spell

Austin is a player that will be fondly remembered by Burnley supporters, as he made a positive impact in his time with the club.

He signed for them back in 2011, after catching the eye with Swindon Town, and although he never went on to fire them to promotion into the Premier League, he was clinical in front of goal on a regular basis.

The Berkshire-born forward went on to leave Burnley in 2013, as he moved to QPR, where he made a name for himself for all the right reasons.

Austin is now playing for Hungerford Town, which is one of the clubs he featured for early in his career back in the 2007/08 campaign.

Blackburn and Burnley are both back playing in the second-tier of English football following Burnley's relegation from the Premier League last season.

Burnley have made a sluggish start to the 2026/27campaign, as they drew with West Ham on the opening weekend, before following that up with a 3-1 defeat to West Brom. They also made an early exit from the EFL Cup, as they were beaten by League One side, Bradford City on penalties at Valley Parade in midweek.

Blackburn weren't fancied by too many to avoid relegation this season, but have shown promising signs in the early stages of the season, with Tony Mowbray's side drawing with Wolves, and beating Middlesbrough, in what was a real statement of intent from the Lancashire-based side.
