‘It will all come down to…’: Neville predicts when Ten Hag will get the axe as he’s now under ‘unbearable’ pressure

Like most Manchester United fans, Gary Neville is now of the belief that Erik ten Hag is likely overseeing his final fixtures in the dugout.

A 2-1 defeat to West Ham United has left the Red Devils placed 14th in the Premier League table, while last week’s 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce has them 21st in the new-look Europa League rankings, having failed to win any of their opening three matches.

Wednesday sees the side host Leicester City at Old Trafford for a last-16 Carabao Cup tie. Remarkably, the Foxes, who are only two points behind United in the league, have scored five more top-flight goals in their first nine matches; in fact, only Crystal Palace (17th) and Southampton (20th) have scored fewer than the Reds’ measly nine.

While the midweek tie could well see Ten Hag’s men crash out of the cup early doors, Neville believes INEOS will give him until at least Sunday to make amends or else risk receiving his P45.

An in-form Chelsea travel to M16 in six days and, given how the Reds have floundered in recent weeks, the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicholas Jackson could wreak absolute havoc on the defence.

Neville: Ten Hag is gone if he loses to Chelsea

As such, Neville believes a heavy defeat at the hands of the Blues would prove to be the final straw for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co.

“Erik ten Hag is asking for trouble. He’s 14th in the league nine games in, and nine games is nearly 25 per cent of the season gone. It will be a big worry for everybody at the club because of the performance levels; United should have been up, but they lost,” the former skipper told Sky Sports yesterday.

“They are 14th, they’ve spent a fortune. I was quite clear at the end of last season that if they’re in that same position in the league after the first few months, there will be a lot of questions being asked. They’ve got a game in midweek, but it will all come down to next weekend’s game against Chelsea.

“Anybody that is half decent that can play, have the quality in parts of the pitch, can beat this United team and they’re in danger. I don’t think there can be another defeat next weekend at Old Trafford. It’s getting to that point where there is a real worry – I’m worried. The results, the lack of goals, [and] lack of performances are stacking up week after week.

“These are the players that have been recruited over the last couple of seasons mainly. It’s a sobering time. It’s getting to the point where it will become unbearable the pressure in the next week or two around Ten Hag purely because of the position in the league. They’re 14th. You can’t be 14th in the league after nine games.”
