‘It would be a huge mistake…’ – Guardiola on Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool and Man City’s title chances

Pep Guardiola has insisted Manchester City must focus on themselves in the Premier League title race, admitting he did not watch Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

City have now dropped points in three consecutive league matches with three straight draws, allowing Arsenal the opportunity to extend their lead to as many as eight points. However, the draw at the Emirates means the Gunners’ advantage remains at six.

“It’s better, of course,” Guardiola said on Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool.

“The team at the top of the league is dropping points, it’s better, but if we make that analysis after three draws and we are not able to win those games, it’s better to think about ourselves, right?

“So, it would be a huge mistake if you think that the situation is better because a fantastic team like Liverpool can equalise a game in the Emirates.

“It’s better to think about ourselves, because one of the incredible attributes we had as a team in the previous years is that we always found a way to win games.”

Following City’s cup tie against Exeter City this weekend, they face a demanding run of fixtures, beginning with a Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle United and the Manchester derby on the horizon.

“Don’t tell me why, but we always found a way to win games,” Guardiola said. “Quite similar, even worse (performance) than the last three that we drew, but believe me, even worse, but we were able to do it.

“Our game in Nottingham Forest that we won was miles away worse than the game in Sunderland, than the way in Chelsea and the way against Brighton, in terms of play, in terms of chances, in terms of many things, but we didn’t find a way.

“I said, no, no, now it’s unfair. Of course, it’s fair. When you draw a game, it’s fair. When you lose a game, it’s fair, because you have to do better.

“All we can do is remember ourselves and I’m not watching Arsenal v Liverpool to think I am relieved or something like that.

“It’s better to be at six points than eight points, everybody knows it, but the reality is the reality.

“So, it has to be an incredible amount of tough games we had against us to be contenders to win the Premier League. In terms of points, 51 to play, six is the difference. Everything is open.”
