Former Chelsea star Joe Cole thinks it would be “stupid” for the Blues to sack Enzo Maresca even if they missed out on the Champions League.
With just two games remaining Chelsea still occupy the fifth and final Champions League place, despite a damaging 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park against Newcastle on Sunday.
The Blues still control their own destiny and know wins in their final two games against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest would see them return to Europe’s Premier club competition.
It’s very much been a season of two halves, with the Blues flying high before Christmas and finding themselves in the title race conversation.
Since Christmas it’s been a different story with Chelsea dropping from second to fifth and the pressure has started to mount on Maresca.

It’s believed Maresca’s job is safe even if the Blues miss out on the Champions League for the third year running, and Cole has warned the club against making yet another managerial change.
“Even if he (Maresca) missed out on Champions League football by a point, I think there’s been progress,” he told The Dressing Room Podcast.
“It would be stupid to think we’ll change it up again. This is a process. Chelsea’s project – I think not next season but the season after – Chelsea have to be competing and challenging for all trophies, the Champions League and the Premier League.”
It’s been reported Chelsea think Maresca can become one of the best coaches in the industry, and to dismiss him after just one season would make a mockery of everything they’ve said about the Italian.
The summer window is arguably the most important under the new ownership with the Blues looking for a striker, centre back and right footed attacker.
Maresca is said to want experienced players, but so far the strongest links have been with young stars with potential and resell value, such as Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap.

Chelsea need players who improve the first team and bring leadership and experience on the pitch for the younger stars to learn from.
You’d like to think Champions League football would see the Blues target those kind of players, but early indications are that may not be the case.
