Gabriel Garvina, president of the Italian Football Federation, has rejected claims of talks to appoint Simone Inzaghi as Italy coach.

“The Italian national team’s negotiations with Simone Inzaghi are all false news, and what is being reported on this matter is completely untrue,” he told Saudi newspaper Al-Youm.

Italy lost on penalties 4-1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina after a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time. The defeat came in the European play-off final for the 2026 World Cup.

The result left the Azzurri facing a third straight World Cup absence after 2018 and 2022, and put Gennaro Gattuso’s position under significant strain.

Simone Inzaghi, currently in charge of Al-Hilal, is also being considered to lead the Saudi national team during the World Cup, with French coach Hervé Renard’s status uncertain.

Al-Hilal face Al-Taawoun in the 27th round of the Roshen Professional League at Kingdom Arena.
