Alessandro Bastoni’s name has been repeatedly linked with several European giants in recent months, and Barcelona are among the clubs reportedly monitoring the Italian centre-back.

With the summer transfer window still far away, the speculation is already creating debate, especially in Italy.

The 26-year-old defender is currently the highest-paid defender in Serie A and remains under contract with Inter Milan until 2028.

His performances over the last few seasons have earned him strong praise from many analysts and coaches, and he is widely considered one of the most complete defenders in the league.

Antonio Cassano begs to differ

However, not everyone shares that opinion. Former Real Madrid, Inter, and AC Milan forward Antonio Cassano has taken a very different view, offering a harsh assessment of the Inter defender.

While discussing Bastoni’s qualities, Cassano made it clear that he does not see the Italian as a top-level defender capable of playing for elite clubs.

“I don’t like Bastoni at all as a defender. He doesn’t know how to mark, and he struggles to move.

“He can’t defend 50 meters from the goal. We saw that against Arsenal when they took him on,” he said.

Cassano is also unconvinced by Bastoni’s ball control. “His build-up play is ‘special,’ in fact we saw it against Arsenal,” he noted.

Unnecessary criticism?

Cassano’s comments contrast sharply with the general perception of Bastoni, who has been a key figure in Inter’s defensive structure and one of the most consistent players in the squad.

His ability to play out from the back and operate comfortably on the left side of a back three is one of the reasons top clubs continue to monitor him.

Barcelona, in particular, are known to be looking for defensive reinforcements, especially left-footed centre-backs who can fit into a possession-based system.

Bastoni’s profile naturally makes him an attractive option, even if no concrete move has been made.
