Veteran Italian international defender Francesco Acerbi is back for Inter.

And the 37-year-old announced his return with a stellar performance against Fiorentina earlier this week.

That was Acerbi’s first match in nearly three months. He had not played since Inter’s Serie A clash with Hellas Verona in mid-November.

But despite the long spell on the sidelines, the former Lazio and Sassuolo defender showed no signs of rust.

Acerbi’s performance on Monday once again raised the question of the veteran defender’s future at Inter.

The fact that Francesco Acerbi is 37 years old has hardly boded in favour of a new deal for him. Particularly considering Nerazzurri owners Oaktree Capital’s desire to lower the average age of the squad.

Moreover, Acerbi’s injuries this season would also seem to have sealed his fate.

Inter will naturally have doubts about whether they can rely on the Italian international’s fitness.

But performances like Monday’s do show exactly why Acerbi has been so important for Inter.

Therefore, the Gazzetta report, a new deal for the 37-year-old cannot be ruled out.

Then, Stefan de Vrij is also very much vying for a contract extension of his own.

The Netherlands international could even earn a two-year extension with his run of excellent performances whilst Acerbi had been on the sidelines.
