Italy players discussed World Cup bonus before Bosnia play-off

Several Italy internationals asked about the size of a World Cup qualification bonus before Tuesday’s play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to La Repubblica.

The reported figure was about 300,000 euros to be shared among 28 players, a little over 10,000 euros each, to be paid by the Italian federation.

The discussion was considered inappropriate by former head coach Gennaro Gattuso, who reminded the squad in the dressing room that they first had to earn qualification on the pitch.

Italy later drew 1-1 in Zenica on Tuesday night and lost 1-4 on penalties.

They will not be at the World Cup for the third consecutive edition.
