Federico Chiesa was in the stands in the Premier League for the first time this weekend, watching on while his Liverpool teammates recorded a 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The former Fiorentina winger completed a move to Liverpool from Juventus the day before the transfer window closed, completing a €15m move including add-ons and bonuses.

Given that he did not have the fullest pre-season after being shut out from Thiago Motta’s squad, he did not make the matchday squad under Arne Slot this weekend. Instead, he watched on from the stands while his colleagues put on an impressive display.

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the Italian’s arrival at Liverpool. Aside from Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join the team next summer, Chiesa was Liverpool’s only first-team signing this summer.

Carragher excited by Chiesa arrival

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher suggested that he gives Slot ‘the genuine quality’ to replace starman Mohamed Salah from time to time.

“I think the biggest thing it gives Liverpool is actual, genuine quality to replace Mo Salah, when he’s maybe rested at one time, or has a slight knock.

“When you think of all the other attacking options Liverpool have, the majority of them feel more comfortable on the left, so any of them when they play on the right, whether that’s Nuñez, Jota or Diaz, Gakpo, it never feels right. Chiesa, more often than not, has played from that side.”
