Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali suffered a suspected shoulder injury during Newcastle’s 3-2 loss against Liverpool last night: ‘It doesn’t look good,’ said Eddie Howe.

Newcastle boss Howe provided some worrying updates for Azzurri supporters, especially considering that Italy will return to the pitch in September for World Cup qualifying games against Estonia and Israel.

“Tonali’s [injury] doesn’t look good, he was in quite a bit of pain. I don’t know the full extent of his or Joelinton’s injury, but they both look quite threatening to us,” the Newcastle boss told Sky Sports via The Independent.

Brazilian midfielder Joelinton was also forced to be subbed off just ten minutes after Tonali.

“I don’t know with Joe and Sandro, it doesn’t look good when a player comes off, especially because both looked in a little bit of pain,” continued Howe.

“They’d be a huge blow for us if they’re not available.”

Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso will release his first Azzurri squad list later this week, predictably on Friday, August 29.

It remains to be seen whether Tonali will be available to face Estonia on September 5 and Israel three days later.

Gattuso said in his unveiling press conference in June that players receiving a call-up, also with minor injuries, should remain in Coverciano for the entire international break.

In this case, however, the extent of Tonali’s injuries remains to be seen.
