The Azzurri have not competed at the previous two World Cups and are aiming to end a 12-year absence from the tournament next summer. Luciano Spalletti’s side have had a delayed start to their qualification campaign, having competed in the Nations League quarter-finals in March.
Italy face group leaders Norway in their first assignment, with a six-point gap to make up. The Norwegians have taken maximum points from their first two games, securing wins over Moldova and Israel. Norway have not qualified for a World Cup since 1998 but have the likes of Erling Haaland, Alexander Sorloth and Martin Odegaard at their disposal.
Spalletti’s squad has been rocked by several withdrawals, leaving the Azzurri stretched. Centre-backs Alessandro Buongiorno and Matteo Gabbia have withdrawn through injury, joining Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori on the sidelines. Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi also snubbed a call-up following a spat with Spalletti.
The 37-year-old Acerbi called comments from Spalletti about his age a lack of respect from the head coach.
“It’s not a decision I have taken lightly. However, I believe that in light of recent events the conditions aren’t there today for me to go forward with serenity. I demand respect. If that respect is lacking from those who should lead the group, I prefer to step aside. I won’t stay where I’m no longer truly wanted and it’s clear I’m not part of the coach’s project.”
Elsewhere, Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli has withdrawn with an ankle injury.
Italy predicted XI: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Gatti, Bastoni; Cambiaso, Barella, Ricci, Tonali, Udogie; Retegui, Kean.
Norway host Italy in 2026 World Cup qualification on Friday 6th June 2025. Kick-off in Oslo is 7:45pm BST.
