Missy Bo Kearns says that anything can happen when Aston Villa travel to Chelsea to contest their Barclays Women’s Super League season-opener on Friday night.

The Villans begin the Robert de Pauw era with one of the toughest games of the season as they face the reigning Barclays Women’s Super League champions on their own turf at Kingsmeadow.

Aston Villa midfielder Kearns enjoyed some success against Chelsea with former club Liverpool. When looking ahead to Friday night’s encounter, she said that anything can happen over the course of 90 minutes.

“They are the games that we dream of, being on TV and playing against a team like Chelsea,” Kearns said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Super League media event. “There’s no better way to start the season and we are really excited.

“They’ve got a really talented squad and they have done for numerous years. If I look back at my time at Liverpool, there were years where we beat them. It doesn’t matter what names are on the teamsheet, they’re all talented but so is every player that plays in the WSL. It’s a 90-minute game of football and anything can happen.”

Kearns joined Aston Villa in the summer after enjoying a decade-and-a-half with former club Liverpool. The midfielder said that leaving Liverpool was a tough decision, however, it already feels like she’s made the right choice.

She said “I’m made up to be here, I’ve loved every minute so far, it’s like a breath of fresh air.

“Last season [at Liverpool], I maybe didn’t play as much as I’d have liked to. When I spoke to Robert [de Pauw], his plans and playing style suited me and what I want to achieve.

“It was a hard process. I didn’t make my decision overnight but I went with my gut and so far, I feel like I’ve made a great decision.”

Going on to discuss her personal aims for the new season, Kearns said that she is hoping to get back to her best and push her claims for an England call-up.

She said “I just want to get back to the level that I’ve shown in previous years. I want to try to create and score as many goals as possible and help the team.

“Obviously, I want to develop and try and break into the England squad. There have been times where I’ve done well for the Under-23s and I’ve been close but at club, I wasn’t doing it. I want to keep fighting and working hard, my goal hasn’t changed on that.”

Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 7pm on Friday night.
