‘It’s a high-level league, whose pace is as fast as the Premier League’s’ – Lyon’s Tyler Morton opens up on Ligue 1 | OneFootball

Lyon midfielder Tyler Morton (22) has drawn comparisons between the intensity in the Premier League and in Ligue 1, a league in which the England youth international thrives with Paulo Fonseca’s Les Gones. Morton left his formative club, Liverpool FC, to sign for Lyon over a €15m transfer package.

Morton started and featured four times in Ligue 1, but in his fourth outing, he was shown a red card for a needless challenge on Rennes’ Kader Meïté. As soon as Morton left the pitch, Lyon collapsed on itself, surrendering their 1-0 lead and eventually losing 3-1 in Brittany. “I should have been more clever”, the English midfielder told Le Progrès. “I have to get used to this league, understand the referees, and know what you can and can’t do. I made, as they say, a very English tackle.”

The former Liverpool midfielder believes that Ligue 1 is similar to the Premier League in terms of  intensity and pace of the game. “I’ve mostly played in the EFL Championship, where it’s more physical, whereas the Premier League is as tactical as it is physical, a bit like the French League.“

Morton adds that Ligue 1 is packed with physical, fast and very intelligent players. “It’s a high-level league, whose pace is as fast as the Premier League’s.“
