Uli Hoeneß is once again speaking plainly – and this time his criticism is directed at England. The honorary president of FC Bayern is attacking Liverpool FC and coach Arne Slot over the signing of Florian Wirtz
The international moved to the Reds in the summer instead of Munich, but is having major teething problems there. Hoeneß railed: „Apparently, Slot promised him something that he is now clearly not keeping,“ said the 73-year-old at the „Sport Marke Medien“ congress in Munich. According to him, Wirtz was promised „that he would get the 10 and that he would build a new team around him“
Hoeneß‘ scathing verdict: „It’s garbage! He got the 7 and the new team plays everything but around Florian Wirtz.“
I feel terribly sorry for Wirtz,“ said Hoeneß: „He got all the balls in Leverkusen. In Liverpool, he gets five balls in one half – and if two are lost, he gets a bad mark.“ For Hoeneß, the problem lies in the Reds‘ overloaded squad: too many top stars, too little structure for a playmaker like Wirtz
The English champions‘ crisis – ten defeats in the current season, a slide into mid-table – comes as no surprise to Hoeneß. Slot had promised too much and failed to deliver, according to the tenor. The Premier League season was „almost over“ for Liverpool because the gap to league leaders Arsenal FC was „too big“
Arsenal, who recently defeated FC Bayern 3:1 in the Champions League, were even described by Hoeneß as „the best team in the world at the moment“

Despite Munich’s defeat in London, Hoeneß also believes that FC Bayern is on the right track. The club deliberately decided not to make a number of expensive transfers before the season, he said, adding that not bringing in players such as Xavi Simons, Jamie Gittens or Benjamin Sesko was „the right decision“
He also defended the departure of club legend Thomas Müller, saying that the „tough“ decision was necessary. If Müller had stayed and only been a supplementary player, „the whole stadium would have been screaming for him“
Now FC Bayern can develop young players – above all Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof, who are making great progress under coach Vincent Kompany
