In the aftermath of FC Heidenheim's 4-3 aggregate win over SV Elversberg in the Bundesliga relegation play-off, head coach Frank Schmidt reflected on the game.
"It's difficult to put into words everything that happened today! I knew that it wouldn't be an easy relegation for us because I saw how Elversberg played all season.
We've experienced in two matches how incredibly difficult it is to defend against Elversberg. We didn't want to wait and react; we wanted to go for it," he explained.
After voicing his pride in striking late to secure victory, Schmidt was empathetic towards their 2.Bundesliga opponents.
"I don't want to say much more now. I know because we've been through it [play-off heartbreak] ourselves.
"You're third, you're in the relegation play-offs, and you're on the verge of achieving a lifelong dream.
“When you then fail, like we did against Bremen, it's extremely bitter. But there's no need to feel sorry; we can only wish you all the strength you need to emerge from this,” Schmidt said.
Finally, the long-serving head coach expressed his delight at Heidenheim retaining their Bundesliga status for another campaign.
"We're extremely happy to be playing in the Bundesliga for the third year in a row – that's not something you can take for granted as 1. FC Heidenheim 1846!
"In our opinion, the club and the fans deserve it! Even though it was a weak season for us, there wasn't a single whistle," Schmidt added.
