FC Bayern face a real touchstone on matchday 5 of the Champions League. The German record champions face Arsenal FC in an away game at the Emirates Stadium – a duel that is not only explosive in sporting terms, but also has a very special flavour for Bayern striker Harry Kane. For the 32-year-old, who has shaped the North London derby like no other for years, the clash with the Gunners is more than just any evening in the top flight.
During his time at Tottenham Hotspur, the clash with Arsenal became a regular highlight for Kane. 15 goals in 18 games speaks for itself. Kane was the derby man, the player who repeatedly gave the Gunners decisive pinpricks.
And the connection goes back even further: the current Bayern star even wore the Arsenal shirt as a child – before he was sorted out at youth level. A detail that adds spice to the duel, but no longer plays a role for Kane.
„When I was at Tottenham, it was always a big moment, this north London derby,“ he explained at the pre-match press conference. „But it’s not about me and Arsenal, it’s about Bayern and Arsenal. I’m in good form and it’s all about helping my team and scoring goals.“
For Munich, the aim is to continue their perfect run in the league and stay top of the table. The 6-2 win against Freiburg gave them an additional boost. Kane himself knows how important a strong result would be – and how difficult it will be.
The game against PSG serves as a benchmark for him: „It was a great moment against Paris, it gave us a lot of confidence. Tomorrow will be tough again – we have to perform with enthusiasm and try to reach our level.“ Arsenal are a completely different opponent. „PSG play differently to Arsenal,“ explains Kane. „We can be dangerous against anyone if we get our game going.“
Kane sees pressing as a key component for a successful result. „Arsenal have a lot of good players, they know how we press and win the ball back. We created a lot of chances after winning the ball – but that always carries risks.“
It will be a duel in tight spaces, he says: „It will be a battle and it will be about who is better in tight spaces.“
Kane is aware that he scored regularly against Arsenal – but he doesn’t want to overstate that past. „With Tottenham, it was always one of the biggest games of the season against Arsenal. It’s not quite the same with Bayern,“ the striker explains. „I’ve scored a lot of goals here – but not won many games. I hope we can change that tomorrow!“
Kane praised the development of his old rivals, saying Arsenal have „become more solid, have more experience and a better defensive structure“. The premier class has helped the Gunners to grow further and stabilize themselves as a top team.
„It will be a good test for us tomorrow,“ emphasized Kane. And that is exactly what makes this match one of the highlights of European soccer: a duel between two top teams – and a special chapter in the history of Harry Kane.
