Liverpool now want to sign the next Luis Diaz.
Transfers from the Portuguese league don’t always succeed - unless the player happens to be a world-class Colombian talent.
When Liverpool signed Diaz from FC Porto, it quickly became obvious they had secured a special player.
Diaz often divided opinion among supporters, but his impact was undeniable. He played a key role in Liverpool winning two League Cups, reaching a Champions League final, and lifting the Premier League title.
It’s only since his departure that many Liverpool fans have fully appreciated how important he was to Arne Slot’s side.
His direct running, pace, and relentless work rate are qualities Liverpool have badly missed this season.
Meanwhile, Diaz has thrived in the Bundesliga, establishing himself as one of the standout players in Bayern Munich’s impressive campaign that led to the Champions League semi-final.
Liverpool have learned over the years that signing attacking players from the Portuguese league can be a gamble.
While the division regularly produces exciting talent, not every standout performer adapts successfully to the pace and intensity of English football.
For Liverpool, it is usually a market that requires caution - unless the player is clearly an exceptional talent capable of making the step up immediately.
Diaz was one of those rare exceptions. From the moment he arrived from FC Porto, he looked perfectly suited to Liverpool’s style. His pace, aggression, direct dribbling and relentless work ethic made him an instant fit, and he quickly became a hugely influential player at Anfield.
Darwin Nunez was another forward who arrived from Portugal with enormous expectations. Although opinions on his time at Liverpool remain divided even more so than Diaz, his contribution is often overlooked, with the Uruguayan still producing important goals, energy and moments that helped the team during difficult periods.
Liverpool’s former sporting director Julian Ward understands the Portuguese market as well as anyone at the club.
Having played a major role in identifying Diaz, he will now undoubtedly be aware of the next standout talent emerging at Porto and ready for a move to the Premier League.
But this player is not a winger - he is a midfielder. That is not to say that he can't have the same impact as Diaz and be just as useful to Liverpool as the Colombian.
His name is Victor Froholdt and he is a product of Copenhagen's impressive academy. He has been playing with since the start of the summer and has enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign with the Portuguese side, helping them win the league title.
According to a report from Danish outlet Bold Liverpool are among the clubs tracking Froholdt and who would want to sign the exciting Danish midfielder.
The report claims the 20-year-old has a £73m release clause in his contract, which is a big excessive.
However, in terms of the profile Liverpool would need, he's the perfect fit. Froholdt is a very energetic midfielder. He covers a lot of ground and he is a monster when it comes to eating up space in front of the opposition.
It's why he could easily be Liverpool's next Diaz - as in another gem brought from Porto and Portugal.
