Joshua Kimmich has spoken out in detail for the first time following the German national team’s bitter World Cup exit. In an emotional Instagram statement, the DFB captain discusses his disappointment, his sense of responsibility, and his future.
Germany’s surprising elimination in the World Cup round of 32 against Paraguay continues to weigh on the national team players. After Joshua Kimmich had already made self-critical remarks immediately following the match, the Bayern Munich pro has now also addressed DFB fans on Instagram.
The 31-year-old shared some very personal thoughts.
“Right now, I just feel empty, and I really don’t feel like reaching out. But facing these situations is part of the process,” Kimmich wrote.
The captain made it clear what expectations the team had going into the tournament: “Together, we planned to have a very successful World Cup, to represent Germany with dignity, and to make a small contribution to positive development in our country.”
Instead, another major disappointment followed. “And we failed. Again. And that’s really getting to me.”

It was particularly painful for Kimmich because he had led the team into the tournament as captain. “As proud as I am to be the captain of this team, and as special as it was for me to lead them into the tournament, the disappointment over how things turned out for us is just as great.”
Despite all the disappointment, the Bayern star made it clear that he has no intention of quitting. “Giving up is never an option for me. But I’m sure it will take me more than a few days to get back on my feet.”
In closing, Kimmich thanked the fans for their support throughout the tournament. “Thank you very much to everyone who believed in us and stood by us. We would have loved to give more back to all of you—and to ourselves as well.”
Immediately after the elimination against Paraguay, Kimmich had already emphasized that he shares responsibility for the failure with the team and ruled out retiring from the national team.
