France have started their 2026 World Cup run with a 3-1 win against Senegal in East Rutherford, New Jersey this Tuesday. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring, to go level with Olivier Giroud’s all-time France record of 57 goals. Bradley Barcola doubles France’s lead before Ibrahim Mbaye reduced the deficit. Mbappé eventually nudged past Giroud’s tally to restore Les Bleus’ two-goal lead.
Speaking to M6 in the aftermath of France’s win, Mbappé acknowledges that he didn’t expect Les Bleus to have it easy against Pape Thiaw’s Senegal team, in a World Cup most of all. “As we’ve seen with the other teams, it’s tough to start with a win. Every team knows that the World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime event.” The Real Madrid centre-forward also highlighted France’s ability to score and make a difference at any given moment.
Kylian Mbappé added that France need to remain level-headed stoic, and reminded that they only won one group stage game. “We know everything happens very quickly in a World Cup. And we already have the match against Iraq in six days, which we have to win to qualify.“
