Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois has on Tuesday moved to throw his backing behind a fellow member of Xabi Alonso’s squad.
The player in question? Vinícius Jr.
Wide-man Vinícius is of course fresh off taking his place centre stage in the headlines across Spanish football once more this past weekend.
As much comes owing to his cameo off the bench against Getafe.
En route to a hard-fought 1-0 triumph for Real Madrid at the Estadio Coliseum, Vinícius was introduced to proceedings off the bench during the 2nd-half.
And before long, the Brazilian was on the receiving end of a pair of challenges which culminated in red cards.
Many have since made clear their collective take that Vinícius’ play-acting proved decisive in the referee’s calls to dismiss both Allan Nyom and Álex Sancris, culminating in a fresh round of heavy criticism for the attacker.
Drawn on the situation during a press conference on Tuesday, the aforementioned Thibaut Courtois therefore made use of the opportunity to launch a stern defence of his teammate:
“Vinícius against Getafe? It’s not easy. At 18, many of you made fun of him. He didn’t do anything wrong, he came on and they’re against him. It’s normal that he has responses. They looked for him from the start and he unhinged the opponent. He had a good response. His entry made us create more danger. They look for him. It’s very unfair to him. He’s a great kid who has to keep doing what he does. He’s had a great start to the season and I expect more of that tomorrow and Sunday.”
