Iván Martín is set to reunite with Chema Aragón and José Alberto six seasons after his 2020/21 loan at Mirandés, with the parties keen to reconnect following Girona’s relegation and Racing’s promotion.
As reported by as.com, he has already said goodbye to his Girona team-mates and will travel to Santander this afternoon.
Martín joined Mirandés from Villarreal’s academy, recruited by Aragón, with José Alberto López in charge and Pablo Álvarez as assistant. He has since featured in the Champions League with Girona.
A versatile midfielder, he operates as an eight or a 10, though José Alberto first used him wide. Under Michel at Girona he was an interior in a 4-3-3 and proved important.
Earlier this year Martín praised Aragón’s knack for unearthing talent and his close, respectful approach. He also said Aragón, José Alberto and Pablo Álvarez deserve to be in Primera and that he was sure this would be their year.
The agreement is for three million euros plus one in add-ons, with Girona retaining 20% of a future sale. Villarreal had kept 30% and a matching right, and a four-season contract is in place to 30 June 2030.
