Chris Wilder has vowed to make major changes at Sheffield United ahead of the 2026/27 season.

“I’m going to make a lot of changes in the summer, no doubt about it. The owners know it, the chief executive knows it, they know.

“What it has given me is a review, an early review because of the situation we’re in. It’s given me an early review of what’s needed. I 100% know what’s needed, and if I have to make more changes, I will do it. I’ve got the balls to do that, you know, regardless if you’ve been here for ten years, or you’ve been here for ten minutes.”

Wilder is dividing opinion among the fan base right now, and, you can understand why, as there’s no denying their performances and results have been poor recently.

However, he is highly likely to be in charge next season, and comments like this are encouraging, as Wilder is acknowledging that major changes must be made.

He has mentioned in the past that the team sometimes lacks the physicality and mentality that’s needed at this level, which is something you would not say about his teams in the past, as they would fight for every ball and find ways to win.

So, history suggests he can build a successful Championship team if he is given the right backing, and ultimately, the board needs to give him that, even if it won’t be easy as they prepare for another year outside the Premier League, so the finances must be managed carefully.

The final five games are a chance for players to show they deserve to stay at Bramall Lane moving forward, and Wilder’s message here is clear that they are all playing for their futures.
