Chris Wilder has vowed to make major changes at Sheffield United ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Sheffield United’s disappointing form continued on Easter Monday as they were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City at Ashton Gate to make it six without a win.

It should be noted that Chris Wilder took over a team sitting bottom of the table, so he deserves credit for ensuring they haven’t had to worry about relegation since he came back to Bramall Lane for a third time.

However, there’s no denying their struggles in the past month have been hugely frustrating, particularly as there is a lot of individual talent in the Blades squad.

Chris Wilder preparing for a major overhaul at Sheffield United this summer

Wilder’s aim will be to have Sheffield United in the mix for promotion next season, and Blades fans can take some encouragement from his record at this level over the years.

That shows he knows what’s required to be successful in the Championship, and Wilder clearly thinks this group is lacking in certain departments.

That’s after he told BBC Sheffield he is ready to make ‘a lot of changes’ to the squad, as he admitted the one positive from having little to play for is that he has been able to assess what’s needed ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

I’m going to make a lot of changes in the summer, no doubt about it. The owners know it, the chief executive knows it, they know.

What it has given me is a review, an early review because of the situation we’re in. It’s given me an early review of what’s needed. I 100% know what’s needed, and if I have to make more changes, I will do it. I’ve got the balls to do that, you know, regardless if you’ve been here for ten years, or you’ve been here for ten minutes.”

Chris Wilder needs to be backed in the summer market at Sheffield United

Wilder is dividing opinion among the fan base right now, and, you can understand why, as there’s no denying their performances and results have been poor recently.

However, he is highly likely to be in charge next season, and comments like this are encouraging, as Wilder is acknowledging that major changes must be made.

He has mentioned in the past that the team sometimes lacks the physicality and mentality that’s needed at this level, which is something you would not say about his teams in the past, as they would fight for every ball and find ways to win.

So, history suggests he can build a successful Championship team if he is given the right backing, and ultimately, the board needs to give him that, even if it won’t be easy as they prepare for another year outside the Premier League, so the finances must be managed carefully.

The final five games are a chance for players to show they deserve to stay at Bramall Lane moving forward, and Wilder’s message here is clear that they are all playing for their futures.

Either way, a huge summer looms at Sheffield United, and it will be intriguing to see how many of the current side are in the XI when the new season starts in August, as Wilder is seemingly ready to shake things up.
