Arsenal played out a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest last night, losing more ground in the Premier League title race having lost to West Ham United last weekend, and they will need a miracle to end 2024-25 on top of the league table.
The Gunners are now 13 points behind leaders Liverpool (with a game in hand) and their decision not to sign an attacker last month is proving to be a fatal mistake.
Arsenal have to bring in a top marksman in the summer to have a better chance of winning the title regularly going forward, and Simon Jordan believes Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane would be perfect for them despite his Tottenham Hotspur ties.
“If Arsenal fans feel deflated at the end of the season for again finishing Premier League runners-up – which they should! – I’d suggest the perfect tonic for them would be to sign Harry Kane,” the former Crystal Palace chairman told the Daily Mail.
“A flight of fancy? Perhaps, it depends on how deep the England captain feels his attachment to his former employees, Tottenham Hotspur. But professionally it would make sense for all sides. Arsenal would get the prolific goalscorer to help them take the final step and Kane would give himself the best chance of winning a league title in this country as well as surpassing Alan Shearer as the Premier League’s leading marksman.
“Certainly, if Kane decided to return to his country next season with a £54million buy-out clause there to be activated, joining Arsenal would be a more sensible decision than returning to Tottenham.
“I’ve no doubt Gunners fans would be delighted to see Kane in the red and white. They would regard it as the ultimate one-upmanship over their local rivals, and taking one of the best players in Tottenham’s history would give them even greater opportunity to ridicule them.”
Kane joined the Arsenal youth academy aged eight before getting released after a season and going to establish himself as a star at Spurs years later, with 213 goals to his name in 317 Premier League games for them.
The 31-year-old has continued to impress in the Bundesliga, with 73 goals in 77 appearances for them, and the Gunners could do with such a player within their ranks.
However, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta or the player will be open to such a deal, but it is something they should explore if the willingness is there from both parties.
