Sheffield Wednesday picked up a stunning 2-1 win over Bournemouth last night in the Championship, with Neil Thompson’s side strengthening their case for survival.

It’s been a bleak season for Wednesday, but caretaker boss Thompson is slowly starting to turn things around for the South Yorkshire side.

Callum Paterson and Junior Stanislas had traded goals last night on the South Coast, with the game coasting towards a draw in the 90th minute.

Quiz: Did each of these 18 ex-Sheffield Wednesday players ever score a goal at Hillsborough?

However, a Jordan Rhodes header sealed the points for Wednesday right at the death; his second goal of the season and on the back of a January transfer window filled with speculation.

Taking to Twitter to comment on the win, Izzy Brown was clearly delighted for his teammate and stated that ‘cream always rises’.

In terms of Brown, the Chelsea loanee is having a tough time of it at Hillsborough right now and, for the second game running, wasn’t involved in Thompson’s 20-man squad.

He’s totalled 15 appearances in the Championship this season for Wednesday, registering just a single assist, which came on the opening day of the season.

That fixture – a 2-0 win over Cardiff City – was coincidently that other game Rhodes scored in this season.

The Verdict

Rhodes is quite clearly a popular figure around Hillsborough and it will have been difficult for his teammates to watch his struggles.

However, the striker still has moments like last night in him, where he can pop up and win them an important game.

Brown’s reaction shows how valued the striker is and, who knows, maybe this might be the start of a prolific end to the season.
