Jack Ross has been ‘shortlisted’ to become the Scottish FA’s chief football officer, Daily Record reports. The 49-year-old, currently Newcastle United’s head of football strategy, is being considered to replace Andy Gould, who has left for a role at FIFA.

Ross took charge of Sunderland in May 2018 after back-to-back relegations to League One. His side finished fifth in his first season and lost the play-off final 2-1 to Charlton Athletic. They were also beaten by Portsmouth on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the EFL Trophy final.

He was sacked early in the 2019/20 campaign with Sunderland sixth, and they later slipped to eighth before earning promotion a year later. After leaving Wearside he managed Hibernian and Dundee United, reaching a Scottish Cup final with the former. It is unclear whether he would leave St James’ Park for the SFA post.

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will retire at the end of the season. He made 101 appearances for the Black Cats between 2010 and 2013, keeping 33 clean sheets and helping them finish as high as 10th before joining Liverpool.

Mignolet played 204 times for Liverpool, winning a Champions League medal and finishing runners-up in that competition, the EFL Cup and Europa League. Now 38, he has spent seven years with Club Brugge, lifting four Pro League titles and three domestic cups. This summer will be his last, with Club Brugge second heading into the Championship Play-off and 10 games to play. The 35-time international aims to help them land a 20th title and a second star, with only Anderlecht having more, on 34.
