If the opening day is anything to go by, 19-year-old Jake Richards is in for a breakout season for Luton Town

It may have been more dramatic than ideally hoped, but Luton Town kicked off their second campaign back in League One with a win, coming from 3-1 down to beat Reading 4-3 at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The Hatters endured a turbulent season last year, with the hangover of their back-to-back relegations from the Premier League clearly lingering.

A bloated squad with high expectations wasn't hitting the ground running as many Luton fans expected they would under a manager in Matt Bloomfield, who had Wycombe Wanderers in the automatic promotion places before he moved to Kenilworth Road midway through the previous campaign.

Bloomfield was sacked in October, and in came former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, taking his first permanent managerial role at 33 years old. It took him a while to get his feet under the desk, but once he did, Luton were near unstoppable.

Their impressive run towards the end of the season coincided with a bright young star being afforded more minutes, and it looks like Jake Richards is ready to continue that momentum in his second season at Kenilworth Road, too.

19-year-old midfielder Richards made headlines with a goal and an assist in the opening-day win against Reading, and it seems that he's ready to get his head down and cement himself as a key player in Jack Wilshere's side after sporadic appearances last season.

Richards arrived as a 17-year-old last summer from Exeter City. He was one of the Grecians' biggest prospects out of the academy at St James Park, making his debut on his 16th birthday in an EFL Cup matchup with Crawley Town in 2023 and going on to make 32 senior appearances for the club.

He won the EFL League One apprentice of the season in the 2024/25 campaign, outlining his promise, and Luton managed to snag him at the expiry of his academy deal with the Devon-based outfit.

With Luton harbouring title-winning expectations, the young midfielder wasn't going to get in the side too regularly, but when Wilshere arrived in the dugout, he began to get more game time. Richards started four of his first six league games in charge, scoring twice and assisting once.

He would then suffer an unfortunate calf injury, keeping him out until late January. Upon his return, his starts were sporadic, but he still ended the campaign with seven goal contributions in 27 league games, and he started the EFL Trophy final at Wembley against Stockport County.

Ahead of Jack Wilshere's first full campaign in charge at Luton, Richards took the number seven shirt, indicating that he'll be in line for a much-improved role in a strong Hatters side this season.

He netted Luton's first goal of the new league season against Reading, and assisted Gideon Kodua's late winner, too. There's arguably not much more he could do to have a better first league game of the campaign.

Importantly, though, Jack Wilshere used him off the right wing, despite his more natural position being in the centre. While there's no doubting the 19-year-old's quality, a midfield trio of Jordan Clark and Liam Walsh in the pivots with Kasey Palmer ahead is difficult to break into.

But the fact that Wilshere opted to play Richards alongside that, somewhat shoe-horning him into the side, shows how high the Luton boss is on the young midfielder.

Not only does Wilshere feel Richards is good enough to play regular league minutes for him this season, but he evidently feels that he has to play him to aid in his development and help him improve even further.

If anyone knows how to bed in a young, exciting midfielder, it would be the former Arsenal man, who is the youngest Englishman to play a game in the UEFA Champions League. During his playing days, he was a teenager with a bright future.

And given how Luton ended last season, going 11 league games unbeaten and winning eight of their last ten, the continuity in their side will indicate that the top two is a realistic goal.

Richards will be set to play an important role in that if he can stay fit, and with two goal contributions already, there's a big possibility that we could be talking about a Young Player of the Season contender come April.

The Exeter academy is one of the more underrated ones in the EFL, with the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Ollie Watkins, Matt Grimes and Jay Stansfield going on to do big things.

Richards has the potential to do the same, and if he does, Luton will be the side to benefit massively in the future. It's never a fun thought to think about a young player moving on, but the recently turned 19-year-old has all the tools to make it in the Premier League.

If he can contribute to a promotion this season, he'll naturally be able to test himself in the Championship in a year. And if he can hack it at that level, then the only way will be up for the midfielder.

Ultimately, those dreams are a long way away now. The focus currently is on getting out of League One at the second attempt, but if Richards can contribute heavily to one of the best frontlines in the third tier, Luton should be in line to achieve their goals this season.
