Six years have passed since the last time AC Milan v Cagliari at San Siro was the Rossoneri's final league match of the season. On 1 August 2020, in AC Milan 3-0 Cagliari - the final fixture of the 2019/20 Serie A campaign - Giacomo "Jack" Bonaventura bid farewell to AC Milan after six seasons in rossonero. The moment has remained etched in fans' memories because of the midfielder's visible emotion at the time. At the end of the match, played in an empty San Siro due to Covid restrictions, Bonaventura stood alone in the middle of the pitch, gazing at the deserted stands and taking in the turf of the stadium one last time before the expiry of his contract. Memories that inevitably resurface with the upcoming AC Milan v Cagliari, once again the final league fixture of the season, scheduled for Sunday evening at 20:45 CEST at San Siro.
On 1 August 2020, Bonaventura had entered the pitch in the 38th minute of the first half, replacing Rafael Leão, and brought his AC Milan journey to a close by providing the assist for Samu Castillejo's goal that sealed the 3-0 scoreline. From 2014 to 2020, Jack made 154 appearances, scored 30 Serie A goals (35 overall) and lifted the 2016 Supercoppa Italiana with the Club. A few days later, the midfielder from the Marche region shared an emotional farewell message on Instagram, writing: "I lived a dream. The years spent in Milano were an unforgettable experience." Before joining the Rossoneri, Bonaventura had also faced Massimiliano Allegri's AC Milan as an opponent in an Atalanta shirt, in a run that saw two AC Milan victories - in Bergamo in January 2013 and at San Siro in January 2014 - alongside one Atalanta win in Milano in September 2012.
