Manchester United could revive their interest in Ivan Toney in the coming days, as Joshua Zirkzee edges ever closer to the exit door.

Over the past few days, Zirkzee has been heavily linked with Juventus. Reliable sources from England and Italy insist the Turin-based giants are making important strides on this front.

The Dutchman struggled for playing time last season, especially following Michael Carrick’s return. Therefore, he would relish a return to Serie A.

Ivan Toney to resurface as a Man Utd target?

In his latest appearance on The United Stand, British football journalist Ben Jacobs discussed the latest developments related to Man Utd’s currently stalled transfer market, including the striker’s situation.

The market expert confirmed that Zirkzee’s exit is a concrete possibility, with Carrick willing to sanction the move, as long as he gets another striker at his disposal.

Curiously, United haven’t been seriously linked with any centre-forward thus far, but Jacobs expects the situation to change sooner rather than later, especially if Zirkzee’s exit starts to materialise.

The journalist believes Ivan Toney could emerge as a solution, since INEOS will be eyeing an experienced profile who can rotate with Benjamin Sesko.

The 30-year-old is coming off a sensational campaign with Al-Ahli, scoring 42 goals and providing 11 assists. His exploits were instrumental in the Saudi giants’ success, as they went on to lift their second AFC Champions League trophy in a row.

But as Jacobs explains, the Jeddah-based club is undergoing major changes, especially following the departure of their head coach Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe at Newcastle, which could open the door for Toney’s exit.

Is Toney a realistic target for Man United?

Like every other prominent footballer who chose to leave Europe for the Saudi Pro League, Toney currently enjoys a lucrative contract that earns him more than £400,000 net per week.

The England international still has another two years on his contract, and he recently reassured that he’s happy in the Middle East.

Needless to say, Man Utd have no desire to match his current earnings, so a move to Old Trafford could only materialise if the former Brentford star is willing to make a major economic sacrifice in favour of playing among the elite.

And even if Toney were to push for the move, Al-Ahli might demand a hefty transfer fee, as they may be keen to keep one of the main protagonists behind their continental dominance.

All in all, this could be a complicated route for Man Utd due to several factors.
