Jérémy Jacquet will undergo left-shoulder surgery this week after Rennes’ 3-1 defeat at Lens on seven February, a setback likely to cut short his time at the club. According to L'Équipe, the defender faces a lengthy spell out.

The centre-back was forced off in the 66th minute without notable contact, immediately clutching his shoulder.

An operation was mooted the next day, then confirmed after three weeks testing the joint in the hope of avoiding it, with Liverpool kept informed. Any return this season depends on the type of procedure.

Even a rapid turnaround like Amine Gouiri’s, two and a half months between 20 October and four January, would leave little time before the 34th round on 16 May. A former Ligue 1 doctor puts full-contact clearance after instability surgery at about five months, roughly four to six depending on rehabilitation.

Jacquet will report to Liverpool on one July after Rennes agreed a summer move worth about €70m with the English champions at the end of the winter window.

Since Lens, Rennes have shifted to a back four under Sébastien Tambouret and then Franck Haise, with Anthony Rouault and Lilian Brassier the pairing and Abdhelhamid Aït Boudlal or Alidu Seidu in support. Jacquet, a France Under-21 international, has made 32 appearances since February 2025 after returning from a loan at Clermont in Ligue 2.
