Sunderland striker Jake Waters called his Hebburn Town loan an experience to remember after helping the Hornets win the Northern Premier League Premier Division and secure promotion to National League North.
According to Sunderland Echo, Hebburn had pursued the academy forward before a loan at Spennymoor Town, and Sunderland then allowed him to finish the season on South Tyneside in early March.
Waters came off the bench on debut to score twice in a 3-0 home win over Stocksbridge Park Steels. He featured regularly as Daniel Moore’s side pushed for promotion alongside FC United of Manchester and Hednesford Town.
Hebburn beat Rushall Olympic 2-0 on Saturday at the Trustmark Group Stadium, sealing it in front of a capacity crowd of 3,000. Waters entered during the second half to help see it through.
He said the welcome had been immediate and praised the togetherness of the squad, calling the spell unforgettable and among the biggest games of his career. Waters added he does not know what comes next as his Sunderland contract comes to an end this summer, and that he would enjoy the night before looking ahead.
