Jamaal Lascelles faces a brief spell out and could miss up to three Championship matches after picking up an injury early in his Leicester City stint. Abdul Fatawu was also absent at Southampton due to knee management.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Lascelles, the only permanent arrival among four deadline-day signings, missed the FA Cup defeat at St Mary’s and will be out for potentially a couple of weeks. That could sideline him for Stoke and Middlesbrough away, then Norwich at home.
He made his first senior start in 23 months at Birmingham last weekend, then featured from the bench in the midweek league defeat to Southampton, before sitting out the cup tie.
With Lascelles, Jannik Vestergaard and Harry Souttar sidelined, Caleb Okoli and Ben Nelson will start at centre-back over the next few games, with Bade Aluko likely to provide cover.
Interim manager Andy King said Lascelles picked up a minor issue late in the week and could be absent for a week or two. He described it as the kind of problem that can follow limited minutes and two games in quick succession, and said it was disappointing after Lascelles impressed at Birmingham despite attempts to manage his load.
Abdul Fatawu was omitted due to a knee grumble, with staff taking precautions after his ACL tear last season. King stressed his importance and the need for careful management, and there is no indication he will miss Stoke.
