Seven wins out of eight matches in the Champions League this season! FC Bayern rounded off the league phase of Europe’s premier club competition with a 2-1 victory in Eindhoven on Wednesday night, meaning they finish second in the table and home advantage in the second leg for each knockout round. The players and management were therefore pleased after the hard-fought win in the Netherlands. “Our versatility is what marks us out,” said Man of the Match Jonas Urbig, while goalscorer Jamal Musiala summarised happily: “Today was a good day.”

Reaction to the match at PSV

Max Eberl, FC Bayern board member for sport: “It was an intensive match. PSV won in Liverpool so they’re not a team who you just brush off. We were also playing against the crowd, but I think we did that very well. We had opportunities in the first half, so did PSV, but overall I thought it was a very good display by us. The team’s reaction to the defeat against Augsburg, and also to the obstacles we faced today, is positive. That shows the character of this team.”

Vincent Kompany: "At the start, people said it would be quite hard for us to finish in the top eight. And then you have seven wins from eight games, which is obviously positive and a step forward. It doesn't mean we've won anything though. We have to keep showing that we have stability and also that we react when we do lose. It's still a bit early to be making big statements, but we've done well in this first phase."

Jamal Musiala: “I’m really happy about my goal. My mum’s already sent me a thousand WhatsApp messages. Most of all I’m happy to be back on the pitch. My focus is now on the next game and on continuing to raise my level. It was really good, except at the start of the second half – I briefly forgot how to play football then. I had some good actions and I’m gradually getting back into it. When I’m on the pitch, I just want to have and produce lots of energy and focus. Today was a good day. We’ve not let our level drop for many games now. We learned that against Augsburg, when we drop off slightly. It was an important win today. Now the crunch games are coming and it’s important that we take our level up another notch for these matches.”

Jonas Urbig: “The crucial thing was that we kept our foot on the pedal and took on the duels in every moment, fought for the second balls. That’s so important in games like this because that’s how you keep the opponents under pressure all the time. With the substitutions, we were able to bring on freshness and take advantage of the spaces that were there. It doesn’t matter if we’re against technically strong teams like PSG or Chelsea – we can really stand up to them and win games – or like today when it’s a battle for the second balls. That’s what marks us out, that we’re so versatile, and we look forward to the next opponents.”
