Sunderland sealed a first European campaign since 1973-74 with a 2-1 win over Chelsea that clinched seventh place, only a fifth top-flight top-10 in 70 years. For Wearside, the day felt bigger than numbers.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Stadium of Light felt ferocious, emotional and overwhelming as owners Juan Sartori, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Maurice Louis-Dreyfus celebrated with their families.
Family framed the day. Chris Rigg’s dad raced past pitchside, hugged, and shouted, “My boy is going to Europe!” A Newcastle United supporter, he has embraced his son’s Sunderland journey and it felt as if the Black Cats had won a place in his heart.
The day was personal for the writer too, bringing his infant son George into the press box before kick-off for a first proper look at the ground. He even sat in Régis Le Bris’ chair, a small moment that meant a lot.
Matchday staff made it possible and have been outstanding all season. Colin Roe, Kev Wagner, Tandy, Mark, Lisa and Carole embody that spirit, and the team kept welcoming people with warmth despite losing George Baker and Andy Edmunds this year.
On the pitch, Wilson Isidor’s minutes grew late in the season. After George’s birth in September, he sent congratulations despite having just scored against Aston Villa and with another child of his own.
In the stands, Dan Neil and Lynden Gooch joined supporters singing Wise Men Say, Sunderland-mad lads celebrating with friends and family. It captured a club that felt like itself again.
Beyond goals and tables, this was about people, graft and pride. For those lucky enough to witness it, Sunday showed Sunderland at its best.
